VISION & MISSION

GLOBAL MISSION

The Paris basis, The Kampala principles, Challenge 21 and Vision 2030

The World Alliance of YMCAs, founded in 1855, established its first mission statement, the Paris Basis, emphasizing unity in Christ and youth development beyond divisions of class, race, and nationality.

Over time, the mission evolved to reflect contemporary realities, first with the Kampala Principles in 1973, which reinforced inclusivity, justice, and holistic personal development while maintaining Christ as the center.

In 1998, Challenge 21 expanded the mission further, emphasizing youth empowerment, gender equality, interfaith dialogue, social justice, environmental protection, and community reconciliation. These evolving principles guide the YMCA’s global efforts to build a just and inclusive society.

In July 2022, the YMCA made history by adopting Vision 2030, its first-ever shared global strategy, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals to empower young people and communities in building a just, sustainable, equitable, and inclusive world.

YMCA KL's 110 YEARS VISION

Empower, Transform, Build

On October 27, 2015, we celebrated 110 years of YMCA Kuala Lumpur, reaffirming our commitment to empowering, transforming, and building future generations. Inspired by John 17:21,
Our direction forward focuses on three key pillars:

Empower by creating sustainable platforms where youth voices are heard and respected;

Transform, by providing spaces for leadership and value-based learning to shape communities; and

Build, by strengthening the movement through mission clarity, social relevance, and institutional viability. Together, we remain steadfast in our mission to develop confident, responsible, and dynamic young leaders.
